It's not just the SV-1 that's getting all that buzz as there were two other instruments sighted in a demonstration event by Korg at G-Roks studios in Tokyo. Besides the SV-1 stage piano and the new microSAMPLER, there's another instrument that's getting a lot more attention, especially from the percussion community. After more than 10 years since its introduction in the 90s, the Wavedrum all of the sudden returns and claims to exhibit a 24-bit/48-kHz sound as the Korg Wavedrum WD-X.
Back in the 90s, the Wavedrum was revolutionary as it featured the nuances of hand-drumming in an electronic instrument. The Wavedrum exhibited triggers, microphones, and physical modeling that allowed users to perform hand drum techniques with the precision of an acoustic instrument. It could detect where you had exactly hit the drum, how hard it was hit, and nuances such as rubbing, scraping, and other articulatory techniques could be accurately reproduced. It was revolutionary during its time that despite hefty price tag, some percussionists were willing to burn some cash for it due to a uniqueness that led into a cult following.
As of this date, much like the Korg SV-1, the Korg Wavedrum-X has not been officially introduced outside of Japan hence much information about it at this point is speculative. Like the rest of the music and pro audio community, we are waiting for official word regarding this newly revamped electronic percussion instrument.
