Wren and Cuff Elephant Skin Bass Distortion.
If you’re a bass player who’s in the market for fuzz, we are certain that Troy Sanders needs no introduction. If you do, he plays in Mastodon. Enough said.
With that out of the way, the Elephant Skin begins with the venerable Tall Font Russian—prized for its crushing low-end when used with a bass guitar. The pedal is a complete disassembly of a vintage “tall font” green Russian Big Muff, with an actual unit being pulled apart and analyzed rather than a notoriously unreliable schematic. The result is a rich, full, bottom-heavy tone that bass players have coveted for decades.
However, the Elephant Skin adds an extra gain stage that sits in front of the Tall Font circuit, offering a slightly gritty standalone boost (meaning: the boost can be used independent of the Tall Font side—bonus!) that is capable of pushing the Tall Font beyond its normal capabilities and into a full-saturated low-end behemoth that eats up all the space in the mix.
